Bountiful Gardens: Plant Spacing, Pruning, and Trellising
Bailey Urban Farm Greenhouse (Next to Bailey Hall)12:10pm to 12:50pm Thursday, July 25

Once your garden starts growing, learn how to get a handle on those thriving plants.

Our first gardening workshop was so well-received, we asked the participants what else they wanted to learn. The clear winner: Tell us how to tend to our garden plants.

If you planted a garden this spring, you’ve no doubt been checking on it while dodging raindrops and downpours. Now that warmer weather is upon us, the plants are growing and in need of attention. Pull out the weeds—sure. But what do you do with those unwieldy tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers?

Gardening with all of its various tasks, is a great way to take care of bodies as well as our minds. The simple act of gardening not only gives us delicious food and beautiful plants; it can also have a profound impact on our psychological wellbeing. Gardening helps us feel calmer, more relaxed, less stressed. It stimulates all of our senses at once, engaging us in an activity that can quiet the mind and replenish the spirit.

We’re pleased to tell you that Denae Friedheim will again be our instructor. She brings her infectious passion for food and farming to everything she does! Denae is the Assistant Director of the Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment (RISE), an interdisciplinary living-learning program focused on sustainability and environmental stewardship, right here on the MSU campus.

Join us at the Bailey Urban Farm Greenhouse to learn how Denae and students from the RISE program manage plants in and around the greenhouse.
